Scale
Flan Base
- 4 eggs
- 1 14 ounce can sweetened condensed milk
- 1 12 ounce can evaporated milk (or milk of your choice)
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
Chocolate Mixture
- ½ cup Nutella
- 4 ounces dark chocolate for melting
Garnish
- Strawberries
- Blueberries
- Pomegranate arils
- Fresh mint
Instructions
- Preheat Oven: Preheat the oven to 325 degrees Fahrenheit to prepare for baking the flan.
- Prepare Chocolate Mixture: In a medium saucepan, heat almond milk and add Nutella and dark chocolate. Stir continuously until the chocolate has melted completely and is fully combined with the milk.
- Blend Mixture: Pour the chocolate milk into a blender and blend for a few seconds until the mixture is smooth and creamy.
- Mix Flan Ingredients: In a large bowl, beat the eggs until smooth. Gradually beat in the sweetened condensed milk, the blended chocolate milk, and vanilla extract until the entire mixture is well combined and uniform.
- Pour into Molds: Pour the egg and chocolate mixture evenly into individual heart-shaped molds or ramekins.
- Prepare Water Bath: Place the filled ramekins in a 2-quart square baking dish. Pour boiling water into the baking dish around the custard cups until it reaches a depth of 1 inch, creating a water bath for even baking.
- Bake Flan: Carefully place the baking dish on the oven rack and bake for 45 minutes, or until a knife inserted in the center of the flan comes out clean.
- Cool Flans: Remove the baking dish from the oven and let the flans cool completely at room temperature.
- Unmold Flans: Follow the recommended technique to unmold the flan carefully without damage.
- Garnish and Serve: Top the flans with fresh strawberries, blueberries, pomegranate arils, and mint leaves before serving.
Notes
- Let flans sit at room temperature for 10 minutes before unmolding to ease release.
- Dip ramekins in warm water for 5 seconds to loosen the flan from the sides.
- Tap the sides of the mold gently to break the seal between the custard and the mold.
- Invert the ramekin onto a plate and shake firmly to help release the flan.
- Using heart-shaped molds adds a romantic touch perfect for Valentine’s Day.
- Use almond milk or another milk of choice according to dietary preferences.
- Allow flans to chill completely if making ahead, as this enhances the texture and flavor.
