Description

A delicious and elegant Ground Beef Puff Pastry topped with creamy hummus, spiced beef, toasted pine nuts, and fresh parsley. This savory dish combines flaky puff pastry with Middle Eastern flavors for a perfect appetizer or light meal.

Ingredients

Scale

Puff Pastry

  • 1 sheet puff pastry thawed
  • 1 egg beaten (for egg wash)

Beef Mixture

  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 small onion finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic minced
  • 1 pound ground beef
  • ½ teaspoon ground cumin
  • ½ teaspoon ground coriander
  • ½ teaspoon paprika
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Toppings and Garnish

  • ½ cup hummus
  • 2 tablespoons pine nuts toasted
  • Fresh parsley chopped (for garnish)
  • Olive oil for drizzling

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Puff Pastry: Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C). Place the thawed puff pastry sheet on a lined baking sheet. Cut slits about ½ inch from the edges, forming a square frame without cutting all the way through. Prick the center area with a fork to prevent excessive puffing. Brush the entire surface with the beaten egg wash. Bake in the preheated oven for 15 minutes or until golden and puffed.
  2. Make the Beef Mixture: While the pastry bakes, heat 2 tablespoons olive oil in a skillet over medium heat. Add the finely chopped onion and cook until softened, about 3 minutes. Stir in the minced garlic and cook for an additional 30 seconds until fragrant. Add the ground beef, breaking it apart with a spatula, and cook until browned. Stir in ground cumin, coriander, paprika, salt, and pepper, and cook for another 3 minutes to let the spices meld.
  3. Assemble the Dish: Once the puff pastry is baked, gently press down the center slightly to create a well. Spread the ½ cup of hummus evenly in the center of the pastry. Spoon the cooked beef mixture on top of the hummus layer. Sprinkle the toasted pine nuts and chopped fresh parsley over the beef. Drizzle a little olive oil on top for added flavor.
  4. Serve: Slice the puff pastry into squares and serve warm, ideal for sharing as an appetizer or enjoying as a light main course.

Notes

  • Make sure the puff pastry is fully thawed before working with it for even puffing during baking.
  • You can substitute ground beef with ground lamb or turkey for a different flavor.
  • To make this dish gluten free, use gluten-free puff pastry.
  • To toast pine nuts, place them in a dry skillet over medium heat, stirring frequently until golden and fragrant.
  • Leftover beef mixture can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 2 days and used in wraps or salads.
  • Brush the edges of the puff pastry well with egg wash to achieve a nice golden crust.
