Description

Juicy hamburger steaks cooked to perfection and simmered in a rich, creamy dill sauce that elevates this classic comfort dish into a flavorful family favorite.

Ingredients

Scale

Hamburger Steaks

  • 1.3 pounds ground beef
  • 4 tbsp breadcrumbs
  • 1 yellow onion – grated
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp black pepper
  • 2 tbsp heavy cream
  • 1 egg

Creamy Dill Sauce

  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 tbsp unsalted butter
  • 1 yellow onion – diced
  • 2 garlic cloves – minced
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp black pepper
  • 2 tbsp all-purpose flour
  • ½ cup low sodium chicken broth
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 2 tbsp chopped dill – more for serving

Instructions

  1. Make the hamburger steaks: In a large bowl, grate the onion and combine it with ground beef, breadcrumbs, salt, pepper, heavy cream, and egg. Mix gently with your hands until just combined. Divide the mixture into 4 equal portions and shape each into a ball. Flatten each ball to about 3/4 inch (2 cm) thickness using your palm or a spatula. Set aside.
  2. Prepare sauce ingredients: Finely dice the onion, mince the garlic, and chop the dill for the sauce while the steaks rest.
  3. Cook the hamburger steaks: Heat olive oil and butter over medium heat in a large nonstick skillet. Add the hamburger steaks and cook for 5 minutes per side until nicely browned and cooked through. Transfer the steaks to a clean plate and set aside.
  4. Make the creamy dill sauce: Reduce heat to low and in the same skillet add minced garlic and diced onion. Cook until fragrant, about 2 minutes. Stir in salt, pepper, and flour, and cook briefly until incorporated. Pour in chicken broth, scraping up any browned bits from the skillet, and simmer for 2 minutes to thicken.
  5. Add cream and dill: Stir in heavy cream and chopped dill. Bring the mixture to a gentle boil, then reduce heat and simmer for 1-2 minutes until the sauce thickens slightly.
  6. Simmer steaks in sauce: Return the hamburger steaks to the skillet with the sauce and simmer for 5-6 minutes to heat through and ensure the centers are no longer raw. Garnish with extra chopped dill and freshly grated black pepper before serving.

Notes

  • For a lower fat version, use lean ground beef and substitute some heavy cream with milk or a lower fat alternative, but the sauce will be less rich.
  • Breadcrumbs help bind the patties but can be replaced with oats for a gluten-free option.
  • If you prefer a stronger dill flavor, add more chopped dill both during cooking and as a garnish.
  • The sauce can be prepared in advance and reheated gently to serve with freshly cooked steaks.
  • Ensure not to overmix the meat mixture to keep the patties tender.
