Description

This Cinnamon Sugar Donut Sweet Bread is a moist, flavorful loaf featuring a delightful cinnamon swirl and a buttery cinnamon-sugar coating that mimics the taste of classic donut treats. Perfect for breakfast or a sweet snack, it offers a tender crumb with a deliciously sweet and spiced crust.

Ingredients

Scale

Batter Ingredients

  • 1/4 cup canola oil
  • 1/4 cup softened butter
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 eggs at room temperature
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup buttermilk or 1/2 cup milk + 1/2 teaspoon white vinegar
  • 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon molasses

Coating Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup melted butter
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon

Instructions

  1. Preheat Oven: Preheat the oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit. Grease a light-colored loaf pan with non-stick cooking spray and set aside.
  2. Mix Wet Ingredients: In a large bowl, combine canola oil, softened butter, and granulated sugar until well mixed. Add eggs and vanilla extract, stirring until smooth.
  3. Add Dry Ingredients and Buttermilk: Gradually add the dry ingredients (flour, baking powder, salt) and buttermilk to the wet mixture, stirring until a uniform batter forms. Scrape sides to remove lumps.
  4. Create Cinnamon Batter: Transfer 1/2 cup of the batter to a smaller bowl. Add cinnamon and molasses to this portion, mixing until fully combined.
  5. Layer Batters: Pour half of the plain batter into the bottom of the loaf pan. Spoon half of the cinnamon batter in dollops over it. Pour the remaining plain batter over the cinnamon batter, then drop the remaining cinnamon batter on top.
  6. Swirl Batter: Use a butter knife to gently swirl the plain and cinnamon batters together to create a marbled effect.
  7. Bake: Bake for 50 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out with a few moist crumbs.
  8. Prepare Coating: While baking, pour melted butter into a large shallow dish. In another shallow dish, combine granulated sugar, brown sugar, and cinnamon.
  9. Cool and Remove Loaf: Let the loaf cool for 10 minutes. Loosen edges and remove it from the pan when warm but manageable.
  10. Coat the Loaf: Dip each side of the warm loaf into melted butter until fully coated. Spoon extra melted butter over edges for crispiness. Then press the loaf into the cinnamon-sugar mixture, coating top and sides completely.
  11. Slice and Serve: Slice the loaf and serve warm or at room temperature. Enjoy the rich cinnamon swirl flavors and sweet buttery coating!

Notes

  • Use buttermilk for best flavor; alternatively, milk plus vinegar acts as a good substitute.
  • Ensure eggs are at room temperature to improve batter incorporation and texture.
  • The loaf pan should be light-colored to prevent over-browning during baking.
  • Allow the loaf to cool slightly before coating to avoid melting the sugars.
  • Swirling the batter creates a beautiful marbled effect but avoid over-mixing.
  • Store leftovers tightly wrapped at room temperature for up to 2 days or refrigerate for longer freshness.
  • For a dairy-free version, substitute butter with a plant-based alternative and use dairy-free milk and yogurt.
