Ingredients
Scale
Apple Fries
- 2 large Granny Smith apples
- 1 cup all purpose flour (130 grams)
- 1 tablespoon apple pie spice
- 3 large eggs
- 1/4 cup cinnamon sugar
- Cooking spray
Dip
- 1 cup confectioners sugar
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1-2 tablespoons whole milk
Instructions
- Peel and slice apples: Peel the apples and slice them into thin strips using a sharp knife or fry cutter. Set aside.
- Prepare flour mixture: In a small bowl, whisk together the all purpose flour and apple pie spice until well combined.
- Whisk eggs: In a separate bowl, whisk the eggs thoroughly.
- Coat apple fries: Working in small batches, toss the apple strips into the flour mixture. Use a slotted spoon to lift them and shake off excess flour. Then dip each piece into the whisked eggs, shake off excess egg, and place them back into the flour mixture to coat again. Shake off any extra flour and place coated apple fries on a wire rack lined with parchment paper.
- Preheat air fryer: Preheat the air fryer to 325ºF.
- Prepare air fryer basket: Spray the bottom of the air fryer basket generously with cooking spray or oil in a spray bottle.
- Cook apple fries: Arrange the apple fries in the basket without overlapping. Spray the tops generously with cooking oil. Cook for 5 minutes, then turn the fries, spray again, and cook for an additional 5 minutes.
- Season fries: Remove the fries and place on a cooling rack or basket. While still hot, immediately sprinkle with cinnamon sugar to help it stick.
- Cook remaining batches: Repeat the cooking and sugar sprinkling process for any remaining apple fries.
- Make the glaze: In a small bowl, whisk together confectioners sugar, vanilla extract, and add whole milk one tablespoon at a time until smooth and desired consistency is reached.
- Serve: Serve the apple fries immediately with the vanilla glaze dip or drizzle glaze over the fries.
Notes
- For extra crispiness, substitute half of the all purpose flour with cornstarch.
- Make sure to shake off excess flour before air frying to ensure the fries crisp up properly.
- Sprinkling cinnamon sugar while fries are hot helps it adhere better.
- The recipe yields approximately 4 servings, with nutrition estimates based on typical ingredients; consult a nutritionist for precise values.
- Use cooking oil spray rather than butter for a lighter finish and better crisping.
